Website Design is the process of creating an online presence for a business, organization or even an individual. With so many templates and online tools for site design, virtually anyone can create a website. What differentiates a novice from a professional is in knowing what makes a good website.

A professional designer understands that there needs to be a balance between form and function. All websites should be attractive, but they must also faithfully serve a purpose. Additionally, a true web designer knows how important it is to keep your target audience in mind.

Balance

In website design, balance refers to the level of content in the site versus the amount of pizazz. While graphics, video and audio can come together to make a gorgeous website, if your site is lacking in meaningful information, your visitors will be few and far between.

Perception

Perception refers to how others view your website. It's simply not good enough to make sure your site looks good to you. You have to test it and ensure that it looks good to your target audience. This is important because not everyone uses the latest version of Internet Explorer on a high speed internet connection. Some people use Firefox or other browsers, and there are still plenty of people using dial-up connections. If your site is heavily loaded with graphics and other multimedia, those visitors who try to endure it on a dial-up connection are going to hit their Back button before your first banner finishes loading.

First Impressions

Remember, if someone finds your website, it's often the first chance you get to make a good impression. If they're not impressed and hit that Back button, you may never get a second chance.

So before you turn your website and your business image over to that family friend or college student, ask yourself, "What is the consequence of letting a novice create my website?"
